WHY UNTHANK?

Unthank is a relatively popular place name in the UK, particularly in Scotland. Alistair Grey used the name Unthank as his stand-in for Glasgow in his masterpiece, Lanark.

When I was writing Gonzo Cosmic, I had this idea of creating Glasgow's version of Gotham City or Metropolis - a stand-in city that could contain recognisable features, and feel, but without the need to be slavish.

I decided on Unthank City, and in doing so, I decided to make it an "open-source" city. Mitch Alexander has since taken it on to use as his setting for Outgroup.

Here's the interesting part though: anyone who wants to can set their story in Unthank City, but there is absolutely NO rules, and NO continuity. Stories can reference one another in imaginative ways, but this is NOT a shared universe. In essence, I hope it becomes a massive meta-textual city, with all kinds of stories and characters overlaid on top of each other, in weird and wonderful ways.

Some of the books Unthank Comics release will be set here - others won't. But the *idea* of Unthank stands behind the whole endeavour; a creative context not bound by rules or constrictions.

So expect to see all kinds of genres and stories forthcoming.

Unthank

Unthank is a comic creators collective from Glasgow, attached to a non-profit charity, and our aim is to release top quality indie comics. We have some of the best and brightest creators in Glasgow on board, with a release slate that will make you wet with excitement.

Our first two books did incredibly well at the MCM Con - Neverending by Stephen Sutherland and Gary Kelly sold out, and Black Leaf by John Lees and Garry Mac did very well too. Our resident gentleman letterer, Colin Bell, worked on both of these.

Our future slate follows:

Gonzo Cosmic - Garry Mac
Outgroup - Mitch Alexander
The Alchemist - John McCusker and Jason Mathis
Freak Out Squares - Harry French

Full creative teams to be announced soon, along with estimated release dates and info on each of the books. Expect to see us at Cons throughout next year, and if you're at Thoughtbubble this year, you'll be able to pick up some of our first releases, as well as preview art and talk to creators.

Unthank Comics is not taking submissions at present - our current slate will keep us busy for some time. Artists, letterers and colourists are welcome to submit samples of their work to augoagogo@gmail.com, subject heading UNTHANK.
